Step to Fix Stop Quicken from Saving Everything to OneDrive

Step 1: Find Out the Current File Location

The first thing you need to do is determine where Quicken stores your data files right now before making any changes. This will ensure that you transfer the right files and avoid losing vital information.

  • Launch Quicken.
  • Go to File > Show this file on my computer.
  • Note down the present location of your Quicken file usually ending with .QDF.

Step 2: Disable OneDrive Backup for Quicken Folder

To prevent automatic backup and synchronization of your Quicken files by OneDrive, you have to exclude the folder containing Quicken from being backed up by OneDrive.

1- OneDrive Settings:

  • Click on the OneDrive icon located in the bottom-right corner of the taskbar (system tray).
  • Choose the Help & Settings option depicted as a cogwheel icon then pick Settings from it.

2- Backup Control:

  • In the next window of settings for OneDrive switch to the Backup tab.
  • Click the Manage backup button.

3- Stop Backup for Quicken Folder:

  • Uncheck the folder where quicken files are stored (typically the Documents folder) in the Manage Folder Backup dialog box.
  • Next, click Stop Backup and confirm it in order to proceed further with transferring Quicken’s folder location from one drive only within Windows.

Step 3: Move Quicken Files to a Local Folder

To quicken data not synchronized with online storage such as Onedrive, move them into another directory that is unknown by it

1- Creating a New Local Folder:

  • Open File Explorer and go outside of Onedrive e.g C:\QuickenFiles’’.
  • Create New>Folder
  • Give it a name e.g QuickenData’’.

2- Move Quicken Files:

  • Navigate to the current location of your Quicken file, as noted in Step 1.
  • Copy the .QDF file and any related files (.QEL, .QPH, .IDX).
  • Paste these files into the new local folder you created.

Step 4: Update Quicken File Path

Once quicken files have been moved, do not forget to tell Quicken that it should now use the new location for this file.

1- Open Quicken:

  • Open Quicken and then proceed to File > Open or Restore a Backup File.

2- Choose New Location:

  • Locate the new local folder (e.g. C:\QuickenFiles\Quickest Data) .
  • Select your quicken file (.QDF) and open it.

3- Set as Default:

  • After opening go to File > Set this file as default so that from now on, quicken will keep using it when opened.

Conclusion

Following these steps will prevent everything from being saved by quicken into OneDrive thereby providing protection against possible synchronization failure and keeping data private.

It is important to manually back up your quicken files periodically on another secure place like an external hard disk or a different cloud storage provider to avoid losing data. By doing so, you will be more in control of your data while also preserving the integrity of financial records.
